How Does Trenchless Sewer Repair Work Compared to Traditional Excavation?

Trenchless repair renews your sewer line through one or two small access pits instead of a trench across the yard: pipe lining cures a new pipe inside the old one, while pipe bursting pulls a new line through as it shatters the original. Traditional excavation still wins when a pipe has fully collapsed.

The problem both methods solve

A failed sewer line used to mean one thing: an excavator opening a trench from the house to the street, through whatever lawn, landscaping, or driveway stood above the pipe. The repair worked; the yard paid for it. Trenchless methods deliver the same renewed pipe while leaving the surface almost untouched — which is why they've become the default question in every sewer replacement conversation.

Method one: cured-in-place pipe lining (CIPP)

A resin-saturated liner is inserted into the existing pipe, inflated against its walls, and cured into a smooth, jointless pipe within the old one. Roots can't re-enter because there are no longer joints to exploit; corrosion has nothing to attack. Design life runs roughly 50 years. Lining requires the original pipe to hold its shape well enough to serve as a mold — badly deformed sections disqualify it.

Method two: pipe bursting

When the old pipe is too far gone to line but its path remains usable, a cone-shaped bursting head is pulled through it by cable, fracturing the original outward into the soil while towing brand-new pipe into the same alignment behind it. Bursting can even upsize the line. Like lining, it works from two modest pits — one at each end.

When excavation still wins

Fully collapsed sections, severe bellies where the pipe has sunk out of alignment, and certain access situations still call for open trenching. It remains a legitimate, sometimes necessary method — the point is that it should be chosen by the camera's evidence, not by default.

How the decision actually gets made

A camera inspection ($250 to $600) documents the pipe's condition and locates every defect. From there, honest math: trenchless projects typically run $6,000 to $20,000 in Central Indiana depending on footage; full excavation-based replacement runs $5,000 to $20,000 before counting landscape and driveway restoration — the line item that often flips the comparison.
